| Abstract | This paper analysis the main determinants of private investment in Brazil using panel data for the Brazilian industrial sector during 1996 through 2005. The aggregate series for business fixed investment spending commonly used in empirical studies of investment tends to eliminate irregular adjustments of capital by individual firms due to the aggregation process of the data. Using industrial sector data avoids this problem and may help to shed light on the dynamics of private aggregate investment spending in Brazil. The results emphasize the importance of the availability of financial resources for investment and the crowding in effect between private and public investment. Moreover, the results indicate that, for the period of analysis, the high real interest rate did not seem to affect private investment negatively as expected. Investment spending seems to depend more on internal resources to the firm and subsidized credit. As expected, economic instability affected investment spending negatively. |
