Abstract	The current research aimed to determine the relationship between the level of reading comprehension and the academic achievement of 60 Systems Engineering and Psychology fifth semester students of two higher education institutions of San Juan de Pasto, from the average academic achievement and the application of a Reading Comprehension Test, developed exclusively to this study. The obtained results show that, in general, the sample is between the Acceptable and Good levels of academic achievement and in the 4th level of reading comprehension and between the Acceptable and Good levels of academic achievement. A weak, direct and significantly correlation was found between the variables, in a way that makes it possible to assert that there is a minor tendency to have a higher level of academic achievement if there is a better level of reading comprehension. In this way, the study propound that an average level of reading comprehension is the minimum standard required to stay in the higher education system. This level extend the literal comprehension but doesn t reach a complex degree of information assess and reflection, as well propound the academic achievement as a consistent measure that shows a regularity in the academic performance of students along the higher education that is influenced by factors as reading comprehension, but it should be conceive as a multifactorial phenomenon that requires the analysis of more components to be fully understood.
