| Abstract | EFFECT OF ORGANIC ENRICHIIIENT ON INFILTRATION, SOIL WATER TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS AND EVAPORATION OF A DEGRADED SANDY SOIL OF NORTHERN SENEGAL In the course of a long term agronomic experiment, dealing wuh the stlldy of rehabilitation of degraded sandy soils of Northern-Senegal by organic enrichment, very high contrasts were observed in terms of wetting front penetration into the soil during the crop season. In 1983, for a groundnut crop, despite a very lOlO rainfall (165 mm), it was clear from llIater content profile measurements taken with a neutron moistllre meter both on control and treatment, with 3 repetitions each time, that the wetting front was quickly reaching the depth of 4 m on the control, but remaining in the root zone, above 2 m on the treatment. VACHAUD Two series of experiments were therefore made to determine whether or not this result was induced by the effect of organic matter on the water holding capacity and the hydraulic conductivity of the sand. 1 First an hydrodynamic characterization, with classical methodology : constant head infiltration followed by internal drainage. No significant effect was observed on the parameters of the infiltration Law, nor on the relationships K(a) and h(a). Furthermore a strong hysteresis was obtained for the soil suction relationship, indicating clearly the danger of using a drainage curve obtained under laboratory conditions, starting from full saturation, to describe field behavior. 2 Second the measurement of daily values of evaporation immediately after sowing, and for a period of 18 days. The results obtained on the control and on the treatment, with each time 3 repetitions of daily measurements of soil water content profiles, show no significant differences as long as the crop development is limited. From the analysis of the data, a simple model is suggested relating evaporation to the water content of the upper soil layer. In another paper, related more specifically to the agronomic aspect of the experiment, an explanation of the observation made initiaUy is given in term of root density. It is shown that the root development as weU as the root mass are very significantly improved by application of organic matter, and consequently the water and nutrient uptake by the plant highly increased. This study was supported by a Technical Assistance Contract between the International Atomic Energy Agency and tlie Government of Senegal (Institut Senegalais de Recherches Agricoles). |
