| Abstract | The aim of this article is to present the methodology of service learning as an especially relevant input for Education for Citizenship. Incorporating the real, committed involvement of pupils in the search for the common good is a key formative mechanism in achieving a complete education for citizenship. The authors propose that service learning should become genuine citizenship practice, fully introduced into school life and involving diverse sectors of the community. To achieve this objective the article begins by analysing the different elements that make up education for citizenship, together with the pedagogical means to obteim them. The concept of practice and, specifically, that of citizenship practice is the basis for proposing service learning as an ideal methodology to achieve education for participative citizenship able to contribute to the common good. The rest of the article is devoted to analysing each of the constitutive aspects of service learning. It begins by presenting a more precise approximation of its definition and continues with an analysis of its components: social needs, the learning of contents and competences, service to the community, partnerships between institutions, and the networking required. The article concludes by showing the different levels at which service learning impacts and what tends to be attained in each of them. |
