| Abstract | As viral infections are very common in the oral cavity and are associated with a variety of benign and malignant lesions, the aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological aspectsof all viral lesions with oral manifestations diagnosed by Oral Pathology Laboratory of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC-LPB), between the period from September 2006 to February 2016, through a descriptive longitudinal retrospective study. Clinical data including age, gender, anatomical location, underlying diseases and ethnicity were obtained from the records of biopsy and pathological reports. For the comparative analysis of the clinical data of patients with viral infections was used SPSS software version 18.0. As a result, the total of 81 patients, the study identified 66 patientswith oral squamous papilloma, 6 patients with verruca vulgaris, 8 patients with condyloma acuminatum and only 1 patient with cytomegalovirus (CMV). The mean age ranged amongall groups. Patients with papilloma had a mean age of 40.77 ± 15.65 years, verruca vulgaris 41.50 ± 23.77 years, condyloma with 47.25 ± 12.04 years and CMV 36.00 ± 0.00 years. The male: female ratio of patients affected by viral infections in the oral cavity was 1:1.25 respectively. The most affected anatomical sites were tongue, palate, lip and gum. The immunosuppression contributed to the onset of CMV infection and condyloma. In all lesions studied,, there was a predominance of white patients. This study allowed us to obtain knowledge of the clinical and pathological aspects of viral lesions with oral manifestations and to determine the regional prevalence. |
