| Abstract | The University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) has created programs to capture and maintain the interest of middle school students who enjoy mathematics. The activities discussed in this paper have been developed and implemented for two of our intervention programs: Project YES (Young Emerging Scholars) and Project PRIME (Professions and Recreations: Intermediate Mathematics Enrichment). The overall objectives for both programs are: 1) to provide a comfortable and interesting setting for students to learn and enjoy mathematics and become aware of its applications 2) to provide opportunities for students to do mathematics in a stimulating, small-group environment 3) to allow students to learn mathematics using innovative visualization and graphics 4) to help students to become aware of communication problems in mathematics and improve their communication skills |
