| Abstract | Antioxidant and antimicrobial active films based on Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were prepared by incorporating 20 wt% of lactic acid oligomers as plasticizers and carvacrol as active additive at three different concentrations: 4, 6 and 8 wt%. The amount of carvacrol in the PLA films after processing was determined and it was confirmed, on one hand, their antioxidant activity as well as their antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. The thermal, structural, morphological, mechanical and optical properties were studied for each film. PLA films suffered a decrease in their thermal stability as the concentration of additives increased in the matrix. In addition, plasticizers reduced stiffness of PLA films by reducing the elastic modulus and increasing the elongation at break, providing ductility to those films with carvacrol. SEM micrographs showed the homogeneity of all samples and the amorphous structure of the material was confirmed by DSC and XRD analyses. Finally, oxygen barrier properties and water vapor permeability analysis allowed to assess the functionality of the active films in food packaging applications. |
