| Abstract | Since the end of World War One it has generally been accepted that the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy was primarily caused by friction among its ethnic groups. It has furthermore been alleged that this inter-ethnic conflict had a disastrous effect on the AustroHungarian army, weakening it till it collapsed in October 1918. Recent research, however, emphasizes that several other factors were equally responsible for the unfavourable political and military developments that brought about the decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. |
