| Abstract | The aim of this study was to determine the resistance to antibiotics in strains of E. coli diarrhoegenic detected by multiplex PCR in children. Fecal samples obtained from children diagnosed as positive for diarrhea (patient group, n=174) and from children without symptoms of the disease (control group, n= 30) were analyzed. 25.2% (n = 44) of the diarrheal samples were positive for diarrhoegenic E. coli. The pathotypes found were VTEC 12% (n = 21, from which two strains belonged to the serogroup O157:H7); ETEC 8.6% (n = 15); EPEC 2.9% (n = 5); EIEC 1.7% (n = 3). Only one sample from the control group was positive for diarrhoegenic E. coli (ETEC, 0.6%). The most of the strains were resistant to cephalotin, carbenicillin, ampicillin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar was identified in 66% (n = 114) of the samples from the patient group, followed by Giardia intestinalis in 50% (n = 50), Shigella flexneri in 3%, (n = 3), Shigella sonnei in 2% (n = 2), and Salmonella typhimurium in 2% (n = 2). Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, and Giardia intestinalis were found in 50% (n =15) and 56.6% (n=17) of the control group samples, respectively. The associations of several enteropathogens in children from the patient group indicate the severity of the infection; for this reason, medical treatment was initiated immediately. |
