| Abstract | This article analyzes the repartimiento system in the Yucatan province as a basic element of the regional economy, which became the fundamental mechanism used to increase production trough longer workdays and a faster working pace of the Indian laborers. The participation of Mayan society in the repartimiento system is emphasized, as well as the role that coercion played in the Indian republics. It is argued that the repartimiento system was the mechanism that allowed the insertion of the ancient Indian production forms in the colonial commercial system throughout the seventeenth century. |
