| Abstract | Air transport is characterized as an oligopolistic industry; such characterization raises concerns about the concentration indices, fares and market power. This paper analyzes the concentration and market power in Colombia, using the Bresnahan-Lau methodology for the period from January 2004 to December 2011. It was found that the average rate was decreased and market concentration and airlines do not exercise market power in any of the routes already studied. Furthermore, we found that regulatory policy itself did not affect market prices. However, it led to increased competition because the regulatory framework for the entry of new operators is able to offer low prices. This generates implications for the regulation, in order to further liberalization, not only the tariff system, but access to routes. |
