| Abstract | Asthma is a heterogeneous syndrome in which the identification and utilization of biomarkers can help in grouping patients according to phenotypes, and predicting which patients will respond to a specific therapy. Biomarkers are also useful for assessing the response to treatment. An ideal biomarker should have clinical relevance, as well as high sensitivity and reliability. It should be repeatable, simple, fast, cheap, and have a good correlation with the response to treatment. We describe the biomarkers used in asthma, laying emphasis on the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide, its pathophysiology and clinical usefulness, its biosynthesis and regulation, and its relation with inflammation in asthma. We describe the studies related with the diagnosis of asthma and the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide, and show how it can be used as a tool for beginning the treatment. We discuss its normal values, and the advancements in the standardization of its measurement. All these factors have made it possible to assess inflammation of the airways by means of this biomarker. |
