| Abstract | Pharmacobotanical caracterization of the leaves from Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) collected in Sao Luis-MA, Brazil. Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) is a small tree or shrub that reaches a height of 2 to 4m, known as pitangueira. The leaf tea is used in popular practice as antidiarrheal, antipyretic, hypotensive, diuretic, antirheumatic and hypoglycaemic. The aim of this work was to perform the pharmacobotanical study of mature leaves of Eugenia uniflora collected in Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil, determining their morphoanatomic characteristics. For the morphological study, fresh samples were analyzed with a stereomicroscope. For anatomical study, transverse and paradermic sections were made of the leaf, followed by clearing and staining with Astra blue and basic fuchsin. The results showed that the leaves of this species are simple, opposite, glabrous, entire margin, oval to oblong contour, acute apex, rounded to subcordate base. The leaf is hypostomatic with paracitic and anomocytic stomata; the mesophyll is dorsiventral, with subepidermal secretory duct and druses and crystals in idioblasts; the midrib is concave-convex, with a single bicolateral vascular bundle. The characteristics observed in this study led us to establish parameters that allow the identification of the leaves of Eugenia uniflora , contributing effectively on the studies of authenticity of the specie.
