Abstract In many post-structural critical texts, the fluidity of language in opposition to the rigidity of binary constructs is often emphasized using metaphors of water and flow. Be it signifier vs. signified, chaos vs. order, movement vs. stability, or life vs. death, dialectically conceived opposites are reconciled (etymologically, put back into movement) by an ideal of fluidity. The point of departure of this thesis is the examination of polysemous signifiers (source, dérivation, tombe), which, multiple in meaning, already refer to the potentiality of the signifier for change, reflecting its fluid nature. Using water as a metaphor of this fluidity, the text follows the path of a river from its source to its inevitable decent towards the sea. An interrogation of origins and endings, the metaphor of water moves between the texts of Nietzsche, Blanchot, Derrida, Serres, and Duras, ultimately emphasizing the watery, reconciliatory nature of the figure of metaphor itself.
