| Abstract | The synergistic benefits of hybridization, targeting the enhancement of the peak tensile strength of fiber reinforced concrete, are examined in this paper. Steel macroand microfibers in effective ratios are used to produce a high-performance displacement hardening cement composite commonly known as Hybrid Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (HySFRC). This novel material has significant potential for increased use in high performance structures, particularly in bridges, offshore oil platforms and military critical strategic infrastructure. Our ability to effectively design and repair these structures using HySFRC is partially contingent on the development of appropriate constitutive models for the characterization of the cracked composite. Hindering this development is the current sparsity of research focusing on the performance of HySFRC containing also conventional steel reinforcement. The work reported in this paper is aimed towards better understanding the behavior of HySFRC in shear under monotonic and cyclic loading. For this reason a series of panel specimens was tested using the Panel Element Tester facility. Relative comparisons with panels containing a single type of fiber, in the same total volumetric ratio, show HySFRC to have displacement capacity and strength enhancements of at least 10%. |
