Abstract	Research on the formal and thematic representantion of scientific images of two-dimensional visual art works, produced by techniques of physical and chemical analysis, in the perspective of Information Science. These techniques, known by the term arteometrics, are applied in projects of conservation, restoration, identification of materials and creative processes of works of art. The following questions guided the investigation: how to relate the arteometric information with the original work of art? What features and attributes of these images are important? How to organize, represent and store these information in information retrieval systems? The methodology was based on literature review on the analysis of works of art and on arteometric techniques. This procedure allowed to identify and systematize a relevant set of attributes and features to represent and retrieve arteometric information. It is hoped that the results of this research contribute to broaden the knowledge about the formal and thematic treatment of scientific images and indicate guidelines for their representation in information systems.
