Skilled nurses have a solid base of knowledge, developed by clinical practice and knowledge education (Carnevali, 1993). Participation in the diagnostic work, demands knowledge about medical conditions and diseases, to enable nurses to be a participant of crucial importance. By implementing updated knowledge of vital concern in diagnosing the elderly with unintentionally weight loss, the nurse will be a much more valuated participant in the diagnostic work Method: This study is a systematic literature review Result: The study is focused on new research about unintentional weight loss in the elderly, mainly in the period of 1999 – 2006. The articles are summarized in a grid, and placed into the discovered themes of importance. The findings have been integrated with existing literature, to reveal symptoms and signs of importance in the diagnostic work. Conclusion: Unintentionally weight loss in the elderly may be caused by different diseases. Diagnostic workup in the elderly can be difficult to deal with, because of the complex nature of interactions between age-related changes, medication and diseases. The elderly can lack symptoms or signs, or have none. This is a challenge in the diagnostic workup of the elderly. There are no specific assessments or tools in use in this area. .The complexity and amount of available information will be a challenge in making such a tool. |
