| Abstract | It is known that approximately 30% of the material produced by the ceramic industry is considered waste and often deposited in landfills with all the negative environmental impact that this brings about. This has been one of the major motivations for the increasing research that has been carried out in order to obtain viable solutions for its reuse. The viability of using residues of ceramic material has been evaluated mainly for use in concrete or cement mortars. In ancient times and in the absence of natural pozzolans, milled ceramic residues were often used incorporated into air lime mortars, acting as artificial pozzolans and conferring them some hydraulicity and increased durability. It has been verified that some powder resulting from waste red mud ceramics, particularly those that were thermally treated at temperatures below 900 ° C and milled into fine particles, can function as artificial pozzolan for mortars. The introduction of ceramic waste in coarser grinding, acting as aggregate may also be advantageous since it allows to partially replace natural sand. Therefore, the use of waste ceramic can be very advantageous in three points if view: the reduction of waste landfilled, reducing the extraction of rocks for the production binders and sands, and the production of mortars with improved behaviors. In order to analyze the feasibility of introducing waste ceramics in mortars, which are intended to be essentially replacement ones, research has been developed at the University of Coimbra in collaboration with the New University of Lisbon. The work presented in this article is a small part of this investigation. All this research has also been supported by a research project funded by FCT |
