| Abstract | There is a paradox in La Boetie’s Discourse on volontary servitude between the primary intention of the author and the reception of the text by its readers during the religious wars. It is therefore necessary to distinguish between the time of its drafting and the time of its publication. The interpretative difficulty inherent to the Discourse facilitated its cooptation by the protestant reformers. Read in the religious context of the post-Saint-Bartholmew’s Day massacre, the Discourse acquired a seditious dimension it did not originally have. Like Luther before him, La Boetie defends a conception of liberty that is more spiritual than material, but the Monarchomachs transformed this «youthful exercise» into a call for armed uprising, not by the people directly but via the increasing power of the magistrates. |
