| Abstract | In this work, the nanoscaled Ni-plating on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) surfaces was proposed for the improvement of interfacial properties between MWCNTs and epoxy resins in nanocomposites. MWCNT surfaces and fracture toughness of nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and critical stress intensity factor (KIC). From the experimental results, it was clearly revealed that the oxygen functional groups and the metallic nickel on MWCNTs largely affect the fracture toughness of the nanocomposites. Also, a good correlation between surface oxygen functional groups and fracture toughness is established. |
