| Abstract | This study aimed to explore the causes of neonatal deaths in Jhagadia block of Gujarat by analyzing causes of registered neonatal deaths and describes the status of practicing essential newborn care practices during the hospital and home deliveries along with the traditional newborn care practices in this particular area. The study also highlights the socio-economic, maternal and biological contributing factors that precipitate negative health outcome of neonates. A community based study with in depth interview of 33 women who had experienced neonatal death in years 2008 and 2009. Results showed that main causes of neonatal deaths in the study area were birth asphyxia, prematurity, aspiration and congenital anomalies irrespective of the place of delivery of neonate. Around 36 percent mothers have experienced at least two child deaths. Low birth weight is one of the important causes of neonatal deaths and it mainly occurred among those mothers who had already experienced the child loss. Absence of trained and skilled personnel for newborn resuscitation was the major cause of perinatal birth asphyxia related deaths. Increase in number of ANC visits alone did not reduce the risk factor of occurrence of neonatal deaths. Cyclicality of neonatal deaths continued in the clustered families with little importance given to social factors initiating the cycle. Essential newborn care is neglected to date in both hospital and home settings. Qualified trained birth attendants practicing essential newborn care practice is essential during home deliveries. |
