| Abstract | In this study we have analysed the possibility that children’s awareness of the grammar of their mother tongue (L1) may be beneficial when learning a foreign language (L2). Working from the assertion that universal principles of grammar apply to the construction of language and are common to all languages, we posit the hypothesis that grammatical awareness in L1 is an indicator of the quality of learning and oral production in L2: are children who show greater grammatical awareness in their mother tongue better at oral production in a foreign language than those with less awareness? The participants in this study are monolingual children who speak Portuguese, are aged between nine and twelve, and are learning English for the first time at school. We were led to conclude that the level of grammatical awareness in L1 affects the learning of L2, and that this awareness may be harnessed as a strategic tool in the learning of a foreign language. Resume Dans cette etude nous analisons la possibilite que l’apprentissage d’une langue etrangere (L2) puisse beneficier de la conscience grammaticale que l’enfant a de sa langue maternelle (L1). Partant de l’assertion que des principes universels d’une grammaire regissent la construction du langage et sont communs a toutes les langues, nous emettons l’hypothese que la conscience grammaticale en L1 predit la qualite de l’apprentissage et de la production orale en L2: les enfants qui revelent une plus grande conscience grammaticale de leur langue maternelle ont une meilleure production orale en L2 que celles qui ont une moindre conscience grammaticale? Les participants a cette etude sont des enfants unilingues qui parlent le portugais, qui ont entre 9 et 12 ans, et qui apprennent l’anglais pour le premiere fois en contexte scolaire. Nous avons pu conclure que le niveau de conscience grammaticale en L1 conditionne l’apprentissage en L2, et que cette conscience peut etre utilisee comme outil strategique dans l’apprentissage d’une seconde langue. |
