| Abstract | In March 2001, a special two-day meeting was organized by the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), a nonprofit environmental research organization funded by the forest products industry, to advance by-product synergy (BPS) goals. The meeting in Chicago had four major objectives: initiate a dialog between different industries on the subject of beneficial use; Share information on the quantities and characteristics of major industrial by-products; Review barriers and aids to beneficial use; and Discuss current and potential beneficial use options. Participants represented or were otherwise knowledgeable about the following industries: Cement manufacture, power generation, food processing, agriculture, pulp and paper, iron and steel, metal casting, environmental consulting, and waste processing/brokerage. A meeting summary is presented in this paper, with prominence given to the organic by-products that were examined. |
