| Abstract | This paper will outline the reasons for the resurgence of literature that supports the use of a learners' first language (L1) in the second or foreign language (L2) classroom. An outline of the ESL and EFL classroom environment, and an overview of the arguments for and against the use of L1 will be presented before the results of a survey of Japanese university students are presented, showing that even though many universities in Japan try to prohibit the use of L1 in L2 classrooms, learners are in support of dual language usage and find it beneficial to their learning journey |
