| Abstract | Theory and Its Importance," "Deflationary Views and Their Critics," and "Primitivism, Identity Theory and Alethic Pluralism," each of which provides a different orientation to the problem of truth. Each section of the book in turn provides the reader with a chronological development or evolution of the specific orientation or theory of truth treated within, beginning with either a or the seminal essay founding the specific orientation at issue. By way of introduction to the book, and along the way as an introduction to each sec? tion, the editor, Michael Lynch, provides the reader with a short introductory essay, with a map in terms of which readers can gain their bearings in order to navigate some of the complex positions staked out in the essays. These introductory essays provide the reader with a set of concepts and a summary of some of the most important issues treated within the relevant section. They also help to delineate for the reader how the theory and orientation of each new section is related to and differentiated from the theories and orientations treated elsewhere in the book. In this review I will provide a brief overview of each of the seven sec? tions of the book and the theories or orientations to the problem of truth treated therein. Also, and perhaps more importantly, I will give an account of Lynch's own introductory essays and an evaluation of their usefulness.
