| Abstract | The language, in its various forms, has been, since ancient times, a research target, given its importance as a means of communication and transmission of thought. In the categories assigned by Cook (2010), the language also has a social function, useful to the necessary living in community. This mandatory coexistence between people is not something from the present, the constant invasions, that the historical information tell us, allow us to see the importance of language in the power that some countries had over others. Economic power is, these days, dictated by communication and information resulting from the necessary contact between different countries. Speaking of modernity implies speaking contagion of cultures, imperative for the relationship of the subjects with the surroundings. Concepts such as interculturalism, multilingualism and multiculturalism gain space and become fundamental to the integration of these individuals. The interaction between people from different parts of the world is responsible for the development of new learning needs, focused on language knowledge, regarded as a commodity. The concern for others and their language is extend to interest in their culture. Part of a growing universe of Portuguese learners as foreign language, this study focuses on a very specific target audience, adults students living in Portugal who are working in multinational companies as the result of constant mobility that are presently witnessing. Since this is a reality with specifics that find no echo in empirical studies, especially dedicated to the research of teaching and learning strategies of Portuguese as a foreign language, the work presented focuses on some aspects that may contribute to the theoretical development around this matter. In a business context, is the teacher who moves to the workplace of the students, where they want to learn a foreign language. Adapting to these contexts begins in the observation made on the students, their needs and characteristics and culminates in the physical context in which the teacher exerts its activity. There are many factors that lead to the success or failure of these classes, in which the teacher plays a key role. There are numerous questions raised by this on the methods to be used and the materials to prepare in order to be able to improve each day, their pedagogical approaches and contribute to the increase of Portuguese active speakers. Not wishing to be assumed as a way to answer all these questions, this study focuses mainly on the role of teachers in designated contexts such as business, alluding to some strategies to adopt in class and type of teaching materials the teacher should prepare, whose analysis is supported on the results of the practical application exercises to adult learners, in a perspective of individualized instruction. |
