| Abstract | In the distribution of power laws, also known as Pareto Principle or Zipf is presented the assumption that 80% of the effect comes from 20% of causes. For example, Pareto showed that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population and 20% of the people had 80% of the wealth. In a corporative perspective, it can be considered that such behavior may occur in the financial system, due to the wealth concentration managed and maintained by companies. This research aims to reveal the Brazilian financial institutions which holds 80% of the segment wealth. In this context, aims to verify whether the Brazilian financial system has characteristics of the Pareto principle. It also has the objective to analyze whether companies holding 80% of the sector's wealth have the best financial indicators: Return on Assets ROA and Return On Equity ROE. Seeking to achieve the research objectives was assumed as wealth those who hold together 80% of individual loan portfolio, 80% of corporate loan portfolio, 80% of deposit, 80% of customer numbers, 80% of operations numbers and 80% of branch numbers. The survey data were extracted from IF.Data Central Bank, period 12/2015. The study finds, for example that 80% of loans to individuals and companies are managed exclusively by five banks (Caixa, Banco do Brasil, Itaú, Bradesco and Santander), from a total of 98 financial institutions operating in Brazil. These same banks also have the highest number of agencies, customers and operations in the country. The only criteria considered in that baseline period which these 5 institutions did not cover 80% was total deposit, however this difference is considered insignificant because together they reach 79%, making it clear the existence of the Pareto principle in this segment with a ratio of 5/83. |
