| Abstract | There is what is widely known as historical Fluxus begun by George Maciunas in 1961 with the adoption of the Latin word meaning " to flow " intended as the title of a magazine covering certain trends in contemporary art in the early 1960's. Maciunas organized the first Fluxus event in 1961 at the AG Gallery in New York City and the first Fluxus festivals in Europe in 1962. (for more detail see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxus) But these are just facts and do not actually address the issue of what Fluxus is. So let's start with the basic translation from the Latin: 'to flow'. I or anyone else can start there and make up whatever we like. The possibilities are endless. All proposals might very well be workable calling up the statement by John Cage that; " … all answers answer all questions. " But do all answers equally answer the question; " What is Fluxus? " ? That's a good question! Certainly every individual who has some sort of relationship with Fluxus has their own individual take on the question. If one were to compare all of the answers from each of these individuals one might be able to group many of them into a variety of categories beginning with: o Those who believe Fluxus to be a historical group of artists who worked during a specific period of time and produced a certain body of work. o Those who believe that Fluxus is a living community of persons who call themselves Fluxus and communicate and collaborate with each other as Fluxus and will continue forward indefinitely as a tradition. o Those who believe Fluxus is a certain body of ideas. o Those who believe Fluxus is a point of view or an attitude. o Those who believe Fluxus was whatever George Maciunas did and that when he died that was the end of Fluxus. o Those who believe that if it is called Fluxus it is Fluxus. o Those who believe Fluxus is a cool sounding word that should be use as a brand name for things like clothing. o Those who believe that Fluxus is only a word and doesn't mean anything at all. o Those who think Fluxus is the most powerful thing in the world. o Those who believe that Fluxus always was and always will be a mystery 6 o Those who believe Fluxus was a … |
