| Abstract | Among the ways of achieving increased productivity is the reduction of spacing and use of irrigation, which should be done with criteria that meet demand of plants for water without onerous production costs, while also maintaining environmental sustainability with water savings. In this sense the objective of this study was to evaluate strategies of irrigation and planting densities best suited to the cultivation of coffee, that maximize crops productivity in southern of Minas Gerais. The trial was conducted in experimental área, Department of Agriculture of the Federal University – Lavras/MG, in a randomized complete block design with a split-plot design with four replicates. The planting was carried out using seedlings healthy coffee plants, cultivate "Rubi" MG-1192. It was observed that the use of irrigation provides significant increases in productivity of coffee benefited in dense crops from 10.000 to 20.000 plants ha -1 , but the criterion for application of water slide utilized can define the optimal number of plants. Irrigations based between tensions of 60 kPa to 100 kPa are sufficient to meet the water requirements for coffee plantations in dense. On the other hand, the increase in the number of plants from 10.000 to 20.000 committed to the sustainability of farming by a disproportionate increase in water consumption for irrigation with small increases in productivity. For irrigation tension of 60 kPa, in which the relative increase outweighs the benefits of the remaining planting density, the number of plants indicated is 13.750 plants ha -1 . |
