| Abstract | The use of substances to improve performance, body aesthetics and for therapeutic purposes, goes back to antiquity. However, the abuse of these substances has increased, and it is known that when used in the wrong way can bring several side effects, which are harmful to health. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of AAS use by bodybuilders of an academy in the south of Santa Catarina, as well as the reasons that lead these practitioners to use these ergogenic resources. It also aimed to identify the profile of the users of these substances, the adverse effects and the knowledge they have about how the AAS act inside the body. This study included 100 people, bodybuilders, with a mean age of 30 ± 9.6 years, 61% of them male. The prevalence of AAS use was 38%, the most frequent being male use 68.42%. The most cited substances were Durateston, oxandrolone, deca durabolin and stanozolol and the side effects that had the most recurrence were acne and increased hairs. The main reason for the use of AAS was muscular hypertrophy, being observed in 71.05% of the interviewees. It is concluded that the use of anabolic steroids among bodybuilders is increasing, and considering the lack of knowledge of the users about these substances, it is necessary to create some education and prevention program, so that this public has a better knowledge and awareness of the use of these substances. |
