Abstract	Analysis of Brazilian graduate programs in Information Science and their historical context and main milestones, among which can be pointed out the IBBD – Brazilian Institute for Bibliography and Documentation – presently IBICT – Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology. Influences, characteristics, tendencies as well as theses and dissertations outputs of Brazilian graduate programs and courses are analyzed, including their academic affiliation, concentration areas and research lines. Despite the administrative discontinuity of national institutions and of the same discontinuity affecting the scientific and technological information projects, it is highlighted the Area’s growth and topicality, its institutionalization through professional meetings, scientific societies and journals, as well as several indicators pointing to a promising future.
