| Abstract | Objective: To determine the frequency and types of mechanical complications associated with central venous catheters (CVCs). Methods: A prospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between january and march 2004 at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – 2C / HNERM. Results: In 124 patients (35%) of the 359 in-patients 231 CVCs were inserted. The average age was 60,9, 51% were male and the mean APACHE II score was 17. The main reasons for using CVCs were hemodynamic monitoring and access to procedures (Swan Ganz and hemodialysis), being the internal jugular and infraclavicular subclavian vein the more frequent access. Mechanical complications occurred in 33 patients (26,6%). 55 complications (23,8%) were found among all the procedures, being 52 (22,5%) cases related to jugular-subclavian vein cannulation and 3 (1,3%) cases related to femoral vein cannulation. The most frequent complications were, arterial puncture (9,5%), misplacement (6,5%) and hematoma (2,2%). Conclusions: The frequency of mechanical complications associated with central venous catheters (CVC) at ICU-2C/ HNERM was 24%, being arterial puncture, misplacement and hematoma the more frequent ones. |
