| Abstract | This article examines the state of the question concerning the continos (royal guards) and re-examines the scholarship from two different perspectives. On the one hand, it focuses on the monarchy and the value that it sought from these officials as a means of governance at the service of the Crown, framing their activities within the socio-political context from which they originate. On the second hand, it adopts a social historical approach based on the point of view of the continos in their original context, underscoring the interest that this office could hold for members of urban societies seeking social advancement through royal service. |
