| Abstract | Demand for crisis information on natural disasters like severe floods has increased substantially during recent years in the world and especially in Europe. Central Europe has received particular attention in 2006, as many river catchments including the Elbe River in Germany or the Tisza River in Hungary inundated large areas, causing loss of material assets and human lives. Because of their own illumination and their all weather capabilities SAR sensors are optimally suited for providing reliable information on such heavy floods, which usually occur under rainy or at least cloudy conditions. We present the DLR service chain and give an overview of the basic procedures, limitations and possibilities of rapid mapping. Additionally, key processing elements and some of the important analysis techniques used for the extraction of crisis relevant information will be described and we discuss insights into value adding principles and the various user requirements that service providers face. Finally, examples of recent floods in Central Europe will be shown and an outlook to the prospects provided by future missions like TerraSAR-X with very high resolution SAR and the valuable continuity of the ENVISAT standards guaranteed by SENTINEL-1 will |
