| Abstract | At the end of the Middle Ages, the Cantabrian Mountains were home to the largest population of noble families in the Kingdom of Castille, and indeed one of the most concentrated in Europe. The present paper focuses on Basque Country hidalgos, and aims at explaining why, in what context and in what ways hidalguia became such a general phenomenon among the inhabitants of this territory from the end of the xiith century on. Using legal and municipal archival sources, we analyse the spread of hidalguia in relation to the evolution of military obligations, of political organization and of tax exemptions, and more largely to the social conflicts of the end of the Middle-Ages, and to the emergence of the concept of pure blood. |
