| Abstract | The Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common congenital cardiovascular anomalies in dogs. The permanence of the ductus by more than a few days after birth characterized PDA. In the PDA whit flow from the aorta to the pulmonary artery blood deviation continuously from left to right occurs, resulting in fluid overload and dilation of the ventricle and atrium left, causing left congestive heart failure. The increased blood flow in dogs with PDA from the aorta to the pulmonary artery can result in pulmonary hypertension capable of reversing the direction of blood flow through the ductus, causing PDA with flow from the pulmonary artery to the aorta. Drug treatment is not curative and surgical correction is recommended in all cases of PDA with flow from left to right in animals under 2 years of age or minimum anesthetic risks. In animals with PDA with a flow from right to left, surgery is not recommended, because the ductus operates as an exhaust valve to the high pressures found at the right side. |
