| Abstract | Erosion is generally an important problem for each civilization, as soon as populations are concentrated and the needs for food, cloths and energy are increasing. Facing this challenge, rural populations have developed since 7000 years numerous strategies for soil and water management on hillsides that will be analyzed for three periods. Traditional systems developed before the intervention of engineers, in order to accumulate soil & water enough to extend cropping on semi-arid or steep slopes. They are efficient as long they remain adapted to ecological and economical conditions. In 1860-1980, were proposed modern strategies of rural hydraulics to face economic and environmental crisis. The governments sent their engineers in the degraded countries for soil and mainly water conservation to protect the cities, valley management & water quality. These were not accepted by the farmers because they decreased their own income. Presently, are developed rural development strategies integrating the participation of the farmers and the development of cultural techniques covering better the soil for improving the rural environment and the farmer income. The use of various antierosive techniques is discussed. Future tendencies are proposed taking into account the economic and demographic pressure. |
