| Abstract | Mental Health in Latin America The two fundamental components of the title of the current paper–Mental Health and Latin America–call for definitions more or less precise despite its purported clarity or general acceptance. After this conceptual clarification, the text examines the "lights and shadows" of mental health in the continent. Social demographic descriptions and infrastructural themes will be followed by a historical-type analysis and heuristic achievements of Latin-American psychiatry. The deficiencies in the areas of services, teaching and training of health professionals, along with the inadequacies of mental health policies in Latin-American countries, within a contradictory context, the social macrostructure, constitute the final part of the essay. The discussion and conclusions finally contribute to the development of a futuristic look at mental health in Latin America. |
