| Abstract | The fish community associated with Zostera japonica bed at intertidal zone in Tanabe bay was investigated and compared with that of bare sandy bottom. The survey was conducted by seine net every month around neap low tide during daytime. Numbers of species in Z. japonica bed and bare sandy bottom were 43 and 44, respectively. Numbers of individuals were 2,703 and 2,018, and wet weights were 464.1 and 326.5 g, respectively. Most of the both communities consist of larval and juvenile fishes. In Z. japonica bed, gobiid fishes, representative species in shallow beach, dominated as year round resident or seasonal resident. Furthermore, representative seasonal residents of shore facing open sea, such as Gerres equulus etc., appeared dominantly. Similarity index Cπ, based on the biomass composition, between two sites was low, and diversity index H’ based on the biomass composition in Z. japonica bed was higher than that of the bare sandy bottom. On the other hand, Cπ based on the individual composition was high and the dominant species appeared commonly at both sites in almost same month. These results show that gobiids and Pseudoblennius spp. dominated in Z. japonica bed and Z. japonica bed is an important habitat for these fishes. |
