| Abstract | This work describes R-MAC, a medium access protocol conceived aiming at power consumption requirements of a wireless sensor network (WSN). In order to better explain the proposed protocol, first there is a study on wireless networks in general. All layers of a WSN are introduced, with emphasis on the medium access control (MAC) layer, which is R-MAC’s main target. The medium access problem is discussed, and some major concerns are investigated. A discussion on related protocols is also conducted, and specific aspects of the studied protocols are considered in R-MAC s design. R-MAC targets event driven WSNs, having periodic collection, unaware of network latency, and presenting a low transmission rate. In addition, a technique is proposed for searching new connections every time a node leaves the network. This technique results in improvements in the interaction time of the node with the network. The proposed protocol is of easy implementation in microprocessor based WSN nodes, and its efficiency and applicability have been shown through the evaluation of power estimation equations. |
