| Abstract | Material choice of the piston is a major factor in the design of internal combustion engines, due to constraints related to performance and reliability. This study is an assessment of the choice of an alternative among a set of materials used in a piston engine with direct injection diesel type Deutz F8L413.The materials used are steel, aluminium and cast iron. This choice must meet a criterion of minimizing the deformations to provide the clearance between the piston and cylinder. A finite element approach is used for the evaluation of deformation in a 3D model of the motor piston through the computer code Abaqus. Due to geometric symmetry, a mesh of tetrahedral elements is created for the half of the piston. A first calculation is done purely thermal with conduction-convection processes in order to determine the temperature field. Thereafter, it will be coupled with the pressure field to calculate the strain field. The comparison between the deformations of these materials lead in a choice variant, in which the structure of the piston has a minimum radial deformation and hence best efficient in our investigations.
