| Abstract | In recent years, the debate on the future of development in Latin America has become increasingly relevant as a result of the concurrent structural crises undergone by the region during the last two decades of the 20th century. Taking up the traditions of Latin American social thought, the author focuses on the dominant trends, particularly the neoliberal tendency in dependency theory which, within the framework of the sociological tradition of Cardoso and Faletto, posits that overcoming dependency and under-development, and re-establishing the flows of foreign capital requires the implementation of globalization, liberalization, privatization and stabilization policies. Nevertheless, contrary to this thesis, the author explores the Marxist view of dependency theory in order to analyze both its validity and its contributions to the discussion on "stagnation-development" from a contemporary perspective.
