| Abstract | Objective: To investigate fibrinogen levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) with infections and other intercurrent diseases. Material and methods: We carried out a crosssectional study to examine fibrinogen level in 100 patients (58 women, 42 men) with DM2. We selected four groups of patients: 1) without complications; 2) with complications of diabetes; 3) with other intercurrent non-infectious diseases; and 4) with acute or chronic infections. Results: Fibrinogen levels were higher in groups 3 (483 ± DE 145.4) and 4 (496 ± 192.3), albuminuria was found higher in groups 2 and 3 (F= 8.1 p < 0.001), and higher serum creatinine in group 2 (F= 10.8 p < 0.001). Differences among groups were also found for time since diagnosis of diabetes (p= .017), body mass index in women (p= .034) and systolic BP (p= 0.007). In a stepwise multiple regression analysis, fibrinogen was associated with albuminuria (p< 0.001), HDL-cholesterol (negative) (p= 0.004). Conclusions: We concluded that in DM2 intercurrent diseases such as infectious, or other medical or surgical illnesses, are associated with substantially increased plasma fibrinogen. This factor may provide an additional risk evaluation for the progression of vascular complications. |
