| Abstract | INTRODUCTION Both the medical and legal professions are concerned with the results of the medical examination of a child who it is thought has been sexually abused. This is because the results and findings of such an examination will often form a part of the evidence in a subsequent court case. The court case may involve allegations of a criminal offence or alternatively may be 'civil' in nature and, invariably, involve the question of the child's future welfare and upbringing. Irrespective of the nature of the proceedings there can be no doubt that serious questions are involved and that the findings of the medical examiner are likely to have an important bearing on the decisions reached in court. This article is concerned with civil proceedings; one significant outcome of such proceedings is the removal of the child from his or her parents. |
