| Abstract | This paper is built as a result of wildfires that took place in Rocallaura (NE of Iberian Peninsula) between the 23th June and 19th July of 2016. It discusses the smouldering fire properties that occurred during wildfires and their impacts on the Pinus halepensis Mill. forest ecosystem. Transects were established in adjacent control and post-fire zone. Laboratory analyses were carried to determinate the physical and chemical properties of both duff and mineral soil (bulk density, total carbon, total nitrogen, organic carbon, inorganic carbon, carbonates, pH, electric conductivity and major cations). The results show little negative effect on the soil after a low intensity fire, but duff may sustain smouldering fire. This paper provides an evaluation tool for the assessment of duff ignition, consumption and propagation of smouldering combustion in order to estimate re-ignitions in NE Mediterranean Pinus halepensis ecosystems. It includes fire persistence as a new variable to consider in present and future fire regime and proves the significance of introducing smouldering combustion and re-ignition within the strategic framework of wildfire hazard together with its integration into forest planning and management. |
