Representacao. Identidade. Estereotipo. ABSTRACT The Northeast of Brazil has been the locus of studies about the identity of subjects taken as different. This article aims to investigate the representation of the northeastern subject in the Ariano Suassuna’s The Self of Pitying , through the analyses of the characters Joao Grilo and Chico. For this, we adopt the bibliographic descriptive method in the analysis of these characters; and the theoretical foundation, in which Stuart Hall (2003), Muniz Sodre (1999), Benedict Anderson (2008) contribute to discuss about concepts of national identity; and Albuquerque Jr . (2006), Auristela Andrade (2000) among others to address the stereotypical issue in the northeastern subject. We ask if the subjects represented in the The Self of Pitying may be considered simply northeastern or Brazilian northeastern. The results indicate that the characters represent not only the northeastern Brazilian subject, but the Brazilian subject himself. Keywords : Literature. Representation. Identity. Stereotype. |
