| Abstract | The facilities management department of a U.S. health system has experienced a 42.28% turnover rate within the last year. Despite the human resources team’s work to mitigate turnover, insufficient attention has been given to burnout within the department. There is a need to explore alternative frameworks to investigate the issue that take into account the complexities and impact of staff burnout on the health system. This paper starts by developing an understanding of the root causes and behavior of burnout within a department and scrutinizing the complexity of how departmental decisions impact the health system as a whole. This is followed by a simulation model based on the data collected from managers at the health system. We conclude with a discussion of the insights that were derived from both causal loops as well as that from the results of the Vensim simulation. Finally, plans for future work are outlined. |
