| Abstract | This paper reviews aspects of the natural history of the Shamatari subgroup of the Yanomami from the upper Siapa River as well as Yanomami ethnoichthyological nomenclature from the Mavaca River. The study was conducted during an expedition organized by the Fundacion para el Desarrollo de las Ciencias Fisicas, Matematicas y Naturales (FUDECI) to the Tapirapeco Mountains in Venezuelan Amazonas Territory. Some of the environmental features and natural resources employed by these people are described with special reference to their knowledge of the local ichthyofauna. Names used by the Shamatari Indians for some species of aquatic animals are compiled and then compared with the names of fishes used by other Yanomami groups reported in the literature. A general description is presented of the Shabono where this research was conducted. A list of the names of fishes in Yanomami is presented. |
