| Abstract | Introduction: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) consists of administering positive airway pressure using a mask / interface. Recently, it has been highlighted as a first-line option in the treatment of respiratory failure. The purpose of this article was to systematize existing information on NIV. Methodology: Initially a free search was performed on PubMED and Google Scholar databases in order to identify relevant keywords. Subsequently, the following expressions were used in PubMED, CINAHL, Medline and Nursing and Health Collection databases: "noninvasive ventilation" OR "non-invasive ventilation" OR "Bilevel ventilation" OR "Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation" AND "Systematic Review "OR" Clinical Practice "OR" Guideline ". Results: Patient selection, failure risk factors and contraindications, sedoanalgesia, interface selection, initial adjustment scheduling, humidification, aerosol sterilization and patient surveillance are vital areas to consider when implementing NIV. The success of the technique depends strongly on the nurses' competence, especially regarding the adaptation, surveillance / monitoring and maintenance of the user submitted to NIV. Conclusion: Correct application of NIV and adequate monitoring / monitoring of the patient results in a greater probability of success of the technique. Knowing the essential aspects that should be taken into account on the application of NIV is crucial. The elaboration of this article systematizes these points, in order to maximize the potential of the technique in any context of care. |
