| Abstract | This thesis presents a study on brazilian historiography, at an important moment for the definition of the discipline history on Brazil. Its general matter are the possible forms of historical consciousness during the first decades of the XX century, evidenced by the sort of historical essay then produced, while its particular subject is the all known Gilberto Freyre’s book, The master and the slaves. According to the hypothesis that it concentrates the main tensions which have characterized the historical knowledge in that context, defining the basic conditions for the emergence of the “professional history” such as those produced at the universities since the half of the century, the research have turned over to the topic of the representation of the past established by Freyre in the book, as well as over the forms of legitimation utilized on the purpose to validate his historical record. Studying it from another masterpiece like Euclides da Cunha’s Rebellion in the backlands, it is sustained the place unique occupied by that author in the intellectual tradition of Brazil, just as the singularity that define his style of historical writting. |
